FLIGHTS to Newman Airport have been cancelled amid concerns about the condition of the runway.

It is understood hot weather had led to the runway becoming 'sticky.'

Five flights from Perth to Newman were cancelled from yesterday evening because of the issues.

BHP Billiton has had to cancel its opening ceremony of its Jimblebar mine, east of Newman, today because of the airport closure.

The ceremony was meant to involve Premier Colin Barnett.

In a statement, the iron ore company said thought the ceremony cancellation was regrettable, it did "not detract from the significant achievement of the opening of our newest mine, particularly the delivery of first ore six months ahead of the original schedule."

BHP Billiton Iron Ore is implementing alternative travel options for staff who are due to travel to site, including the use of charter services and landing aircraft at alternative locations.
